Fattening Wethers
This year we were fortunate enough to purchase some client’s wethers to mix in with our own as a trial of fattening them on feeders & a multispecies oats crop. Reaching at 11 months of age now and they have been powering along nicely, doing 225 grams a day on the oats and 330 grams a day in the feedlot. Has been a learning experience and very interesting to find out what works for us and what doesn’t. Practice makes perfect.
What’s New
Lambing and calving
One of our favourite times of the year is here! And they are hitting the ground running. So, rewarding seeing all the new genetics coming through and the ewes and cows being such excellent mothers. Mothering up the ewes and lambs is next.
5 star data quality-6th in Aust
Sheep Genetics has awarded us for our hard work and dedication to data collection and submission. Coming 6th in Australia! How fantastic is that.
More on what’s been happening.
A lovely testimony from John Kennedy from Poverty Pastoral at Uralla New England NSW
“Always keen to buy Karbullah blood sheep. They have done exceptionally well here. Big clean bodied sheep cutting a good long white staple of wool that can handle heavy rainfall. Have a very good worm tolerance in an area where barbers pole worm can be an issue. Ewes very fertile and excellent mothers, if they have twins they rear twins. Wool tests a lot finer than it looks. We shore a thousand young wethers early this year only six months of age with 80 mm staple length to cut over three kgs of 16 micron wool.”
“We shore a mob of four tooth wethers here that cut eight kilograms of wool which is the heaviest cut I have ever got.”
“In terms of doability, ease of shearing, worm tolerance, fertility and big cuts of quality white wool they have ticked all the boxes. The New England can be tough for sheep with high summer rainfall and associated worm and fly issues and hard, cold winters but the Karbullah sheep have done very well in this environment. Goondiwindi Show
Show time in May 2024 is such a community time.
Each year we are involved with many to bring the community Show home for the public.
Winning first place in the Heifer Competition highlighting this year with Karbullah’s Angus heifers. With a total score of 191 for the two judges' score, coming in one point ahead of second place, Killen family from Bangalow, Kindon. Top scores for temperament, structural soundness and weight for age assisting us in the win. Was an amazing day, getting to see everyone’s herd and learn how everyone does something a little different.
Spirit on the Anzac – Anzac biscuits is annually sponsored for the cooking competition. Classes from under 7 to adults, each section is well supported yet again this year.
Vicki took home the Goondiwindi Regional acquisition with her photo of Mark walking away our ewes.
Yard Dog Trials was sponsored again this year, with great talented dog/owner teams performing over 2 days at the show again this year.
EID and their benefits!
Eid an amazing tool to help with data collection, with the ability to track the performance of each individual animal from start to finish even with the potential to follow through to the carcass. Which we can do with the wethers going to Gundagai. Also, you have the option to track weigh gains, fleece weights, pregnancy status and much more. It really helps improve the efficiency, knowledge and production of your operation. Highly recommended!
SRS an organisation formed through kinship and shared values and principle of breeding quality sheep to continue the research and development of Dr. Jim Watt’s legacy. With EID tags becoming imminent SRS has discounted the price on EID tags for members – just one of the many benefits of becoming a member.
